How AI-Made Media Is Numbing the World
The content explosion that I predicted is well underway now. It’s not as evident as I initially thought, but nevertheless it’s happening. Because the explosion is slower than expected, we’re gradually adapting to it without even noticing. We should, however take, a moment, observe and think about where we are with the developments and whether things are turning south or not.
So where are we standing related to content explosion?
People now use machines to generate content to their blogs, company websites, social media and pretty much anywhere we can think of. It’s the first implication of emergence of AI. Everyone is writing Economist / New Yorker level quality articles in massive scale. Companies and influencers have set up automated workflows for digging out content ideas, sources and AI is writing and publishing articles for them.
There’s so much of every kind of content from various sources (some real some questionable) out there now that we have become numb to all of it.
We don’t care. Everyone is doing it. AI generated articles, images and video catch my eye on the street and in Linked In and in newspapers.
Media is growingly full of clickbait and dying slowly. It’s a trap direction they have chosen. A downward spiral; news outlets have to create engaging content so people would click on the articles and they would get advertising or paywall money. Better yet, the headlines should be as dramatic as possible so those clicks would come in. Users click on these headlines (in slight panic), only to understand things are not that dramatic. They slowly stop trusting media outlets so article headlines become even more dramatic and engaging turning users numb and uninterested in about anything.
Pretty much the same effect is happening in social media. Users become immune to engaging content. People don’t know who to trust and end up numb to everything they see, read and hear. We believe in nothing.
This also changes society as a whole and influences politics. And here we are now. No matter if a politician or a journalist, nobody cares what you say or what you do. The overall strategy of politicians and even presidents is to flood media with misleading information. Turning world to panic mode and then doing whatever they want behind the distress.
Pretty much all of that is the content explosion I was thinking about in my article some time ago. Now we will have to see if we do get our grips back with the reality or is this numbness effect going to become even more drastic. Currently it seems, things are heading south. World is in distress and nobody really cares.
